Rani Khedira steps away from Tunisia national team

Rani Khedira has decided to end his international career with Tunisia after making six appearances for the North African nation.

The 32-year-old Union Berlin midfielder announced the decision through his agency, bringing a brief but memorable chapter to a close.

Khedira only chose to represent Tunisia, the birthplace of his parents, earlier this year. He featured in all three of the country’s World Cup group matches against Sweden, Japan and the Netherlands. Following Tunisia’s early elimination, the midfielder concluded that the time had come to give younger players greater opportunities.

“Tunisia has many young and talented players who have the potential to shape the future of the national team successfully,” Khedira explained. After careful consideration, he said he had decided “that now is the right time to make room for this further development process.”

Although his international career lasted only a short time, Khedira leaves with pride. “It was a great honour for me to wear the Tunisia national team shirt every time,” he said.

The Union player will now focus entirely on his club responsibilities in Berlin. His decision allows Tunisia to begin building around a younger generation, while Khedira closes his international chapter after experiencing a World Cup and earning six caps.
