Urs Fischer praises Phillipp Mwene ahead of Frankfurt match

Phillipp Mwene has become one of Mainz 05’s most dependable players, and coach Urs Fischer has highlighted the defender’s impressive start to the season.

The 32-year-old wing-back has completed every competitive match so far, consistently showing energy, discipline and reliability on the left flank.

“He covers a lot of ground and has a high work rate. He is primarily a good defender and displays good defensive shape”, Fischer said. In other words, Mwene covers plenty of ground, defends intelligently and understands his responsibilities within Mainz’s back line.

The coach also values his contribution in attack. “It always turns on when things start moving forward. He has a good presence in the opponent’s penalty area.” Mwene has already recorded one goal and three assists across competitions this season, underlining his influence in both areas.

Fischer particularly praised the defender’s intensity in challenges. “He is tenacious in duels and is doing really well at the moment.” He also recalled Mwene’s importance during the previous campaign, when his performances helped Mainz avoid relegation trouble.

Mwene is expected to start again when Mainz host Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. His consistency has made him a central figure in Fischer’s plans.
