Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou faces race against time for Al-Hilal return

Morocco international Yassine Bounou is facing a race against time to recover from a hamstring injury and feature for Al-Hilal against Al-Taawoun in the Saudi Pro League on Saturday.

The experienced goalkeeper is receiving treatment at Al-Hilal’s medical facility after suffering the injury before Monday’s 2-0 defeat by Neom, with the Saudi Arabian club yet to confirm how long he will be sidelined.

Bounou was initially named in the starting line-up for the Neom fixture but was withdrawn shortly before kick-off after experiencing muscle discomfort during the warm-up.

Bounou’s availability remains uncertain

Al-Hilal confirmed on Wednesday that the Moroccan was undergoing treatment for the hamstring problem at the Almajdiah Sports Center.

“Yassine Bounou underwent a treatment session in the medical clinic at the Almajdiah Sports Center due to a hamstring injury,” the club stated on Wednesday.

Saudi publication Arriyadiyah reports that Al-Hilal’s medical team has not yet given Bounou clearance to travel with the squad for Saturday’s match against Al-Taawoun.

A final decision on whether the 33-year-old will be involved is expected after the club’s final training session before the fixture.

Morocco’s World Cup hero an important figure for Al-Hilal

Bounou has established himself as one of the leading African goalkeepers in the Saudi Pro League since joining Al-Hilal from Sevilla in August 2023.

The Moroccan made his move to the Saudi giants on a permanent transfer reportedly worth around €21m after playing a key role in Sevilla’s Europa League triumph and helping Morocco make history by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He subsequently signed a multi-year contract with Al-Hilal that runs until 2028.

His potential absence would be a concern for the league leaders as they prepare for another important fixture in their title campaign.

Al-Hilal lead Saudi Pro League

Al-Hilal currently sit at the top of the Saudi Pro League with 15 points, level with Al-Nassr and Al-Qadsiah but ahead on goal difference.

While Bounou’s fitness remains under assessment, Al-Hilal have received positive news on Crysencio Summerville, who has recovered from a minor muscle problem sustained late in the defeat by Neom and is available for selection.

Bounou’s fitness will also be closely monitored by Morocco given his importance to the national team, particularly with the Atlas Lions continuing preparations for their upcoming international commitments.
