Olise explains Bayern Munich’s five-goal Champions League win over Bodø/Glimt

Michael Olise says Bayern Munich remained committed to their approach before eventually beating Bodø/Glimt 5-0 in their opening Champions League league-phase match.

All five goals came after half-time, with the sides level at 0-0 at the interval.

“We play the same way, whatever happens,” Olise told the official UEFA website.

“At half-time, we asked the manager to continue playing in the same way. The match would improve and we had to take our chances – and we took them.”

Olise was named player of the match after scoring two of Bayern Munich’s five goals.

He said Bodø/Glimt’s defensive approach had made the opening 45 minutes particularly difficult.

“I think the first half was a little difficult,” added the France winger. “They defended deep and the game was very tight.

“Obviously, once the game opened up, we were able to create chances and take them.”

Olise also praised the understanding within the Bayern Munich squad, saying the team’s familiarity with one another helped them find their rhythm after the break.

“It is good to play with this team,” he said. “We all know each other’s movements and we know how to play together. When it works, it is good and we are happy.”

The result ensured Bayern Munich avoided an upset against Bodø/Glimt, who beat Manchester City 3-2 last season and defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the league phase.

Bayern Munich’s remaining league-phase fixtures are Arsenal at home, Atletico Madrid away, Real Betis at home, Manchester United away, Lille away, Slovan Bratislava at home and Viking away.

The Champions League is being played with 36 teams in the league phase for the third consecutive season.

Each side will play eight matches, including four at home and four away. At the end of the league phase, the top eight teams in the table will qualify directly for the last 16.

Teams finishing from ninth to 16th will enter play-offs against sides placed 17th to 24th, with the eight winners completing the last-16 line-up.

Following the draw, the teams in ninth and 10th will face one of the clubs finishing 23rd or 24th, with the same system applied to the remaining positions.
