Nico Paz explains why he chose Como over Real Madrid return

Nico Paz says he chose to remain at Como because the Italian club offered him the best opportunity to continue developing, despite Real Madrid’s intention to bring him back in the summer of 2026.

The Argentina midfielder made his Champions League debut for Como and explained his decision after the club’s 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig.

Real Madrid had been determined to re-sign Paz and had informed the player of their desire to bring him back. However, Paz believed he would struggle to get enough playing time in a squad containing Bernardo Silva, Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham.

After considering his options, the midfielder decided to continue his career with Como and manager Cesc Fabregas. Como agreed to pay €60m to secure his services on a permanent basis.

Real Madrid have nevertheless retained control of Paz’s future by including a buy-back clause worth €80m for next year.

Speaking after Como’s emphatic win against Leipzig, Paz told AS: “I thought that I would be here, where I could develop more.”

He added: “I think I made the right decision by staying at Como, and I am happy that I did.”

Paz also reflected on the European victory, describing it as a memorable occasion for the Italian side.

“It was a historic night. We produced an amazing performance,” he said. “We were very excited to play this match. I think we dealt with it in the best possible way. We are very happy with the performance we gave.”
