Harry Kane warns Bayern Munich’s Champions League rivals after Bodø/Glimt win

Harry Kane says Bayern Munich will be difficult opponents for any team in the Champions League after beginning their league-phase campaign with a 5-0 victory over Bodø/Glimt.

Bayern made an emphatic start to their European campaign, scoring five times in their opening match. Kane said the result was important as the German side aim to finish as high as possible in the league phase.

“It is always important to make a strong start,” Kane said after the match. “We have a long journey ahead of us and are looking to finish in the highest position possible in the league.”

The top eight teams in the league phase qualify directly for the last 16.

Bayern’s first Champions League fixture at home was played against a Bodø/Glimt side Kane described as organised, but the England striker said his team had achieved what it set out to do.

“In our first home match, we wanted to put in a strong performance and make our mark on the competition,” he said. “We faced an organised opponent, but it was a great night in every respect.”

Bayern were eliminated by holders Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals last season, losing 6-5 on aggregate. Kane believes small margins were responsible for their failure to go further.

“Fine margins,” he said. “We were extremely close last season. The semi-final was decided by small details.”

Kane was also asked about his nomination for the Ballon d’Or. The forward said he was proud to be shortlisted alongside his Bayern team-mates, while acknowledging that the final decision would be made by the voters.

“I am proud to be nominated with my team-mates, but it is not in my hands; it is up to the voters,” Kane said. “It was an outstanding season for me personally, but all I can do now is focus on this season.”

The 32-year-old added that Bayern’s threat extends beyond their attacking play, insisting opponents will face problems whether his side have possession or not.

“We are a threat to any team, and the teams that face us will find it very difficult against us with the ball or without it,” he said.

Kane also highlighted the benefit of Bayern having another year working under their manager. He said the squad now has a clearer understanding of the manager’s ideas and remains determined to win.

“Now we have another year with the manager, we understand his ideas, and we are humble and hungry to win,” he added.
