Algeria midfielder Nabil Bentaleb returns to Lille training after Champions League scare

Nabil Bentaleb has returned to full training with Lille after being substituted at half-time during their Champions League defeat by Real Betis because of visual disturbances.

The Algeria international was included in Lille’s starting XI for Tuesday night’s match, but he was taken off at the interval after experiencing the problem in the closing stages of the first half.

His early departure caused concern, particularly because Lille were still leading 2-1 when the 31-year-old midfielder left the field. The French side eventually lost the match 3-2 in their opening Champions League fixture.

After the game, Lille coach Davide Ancelotti explained that Bentaleb had suffered visual disturbances shortly before half-time.

However, there now appears to be little cause for concern over the midfielder’s immediate fitness after he returned to training on Thursday.

Bentaleb was present at Lille’s training centre and took part in the full group session with his team-mates. His return suggests that he is not facing a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

The development is also positive news for Algeria, with new coach Brahim Hemdani expected to announce his first squad soon.

Bentaleb is among the experienced players who could be considered for the upcoming international camp. His ability to control the game, recover possession and provide experience at the highest level could make him an important option for the new coaching staff.

His quick return means his chances of being included in the Algeria squad have been strengthened.

Unless he suffers another medical setback, Bentaleb should be available for the September training camp as Algeria prepare to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Greens are scheduled to host Zambia on 25 September in Tizi Ouzou before travelling to Burundi four days later. They are then due to face Niger in a friendly match on 6 October.

Bentaleb’s return to Lille training has therefore eased the concerns that followed his withdrawal against Real Betis.

What initially appeared to be a worrying situation has developed into a more reassuring one, with the midfielder back among his team-mates and his availability for Algeria looking increasingly likely.
