Como mark Champions League debut with emphatic win as Roma draw at Fenerbahce

Como made a memorable start to their first-ever Champions League campaign with a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the opening round of the league phase on Thursday.

Cesc Fabregas’ side took the lead after 15 minutes when Martin Baturina fired into the left corner from inside the penalty area. The goal was the first scored by Como in the competition.

Como continued to press and doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time, with Anastasios Douvikas finding the net in the 38th minute.

Alassane Diao added a third for the Italian side nine minutes into the second half, although RB Leipzig responded shortly afterwards when Andrija Maksimovic reduced the deficit in the 58th minute.

The hosts completed a convincing victory in the 90th minute. Maximo Perrone scored Como’s fourth after being played in by a fine pass from Nico Paz, sealing an historic result for the club on their Champions League debut.

Roma held by Fenerbahce

Roma began their European campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahce.

The Italian side went ahead in the 39th minute when Bryan Cristante produced a precise finish from the edge of the penalty area following a pass from Donyell Malen.

Fenerbahce levelled three minutes after the interval. Archie Brown scored in the 48th minute after receiving a pass from Mason Greenwood to earn the Turkish hosts a share of the points.

PSV held by Shakhtar Donetsk

PSV Eindhoven were also held to a 1-1 draw at home by Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukrainian team opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, with Mendoza putting Shakhtar ahead at 45+1 minutes.

PSV responded quickly after the restart, with Sergino Dest equalising three minutes into the second half.

Lens win late at Slavia Prague

Lens claimed a 3-2 away victory against Slavia Prague in another match from the same league-phase round.

Slavia Prague recovered from conceding three goals but could not avoid defeat. Danylo Sikan scored twice for the Czech side in the 51st and 88th minutes.

Lens’ goals came from Abdallah Sima, Florian Thauvin and Ruben Aguilar. Sima struck in the 73rd minute, before Thauvin and Aguilar scored in stoppage time at 90+1 and 90+3 minutes respectively.

The results left Como with a winning start to their first Champions League appearance, while Roma, PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk each began with a point.
