Nicolo Tresoldi delays Italy decision as Germany battle continues

Nicolo Tresoldi has declined a call-up to Italy’s squad for the upcoming Nations League matches, choosing to take more time before deciding which country he will represent, according to a report by Italian journalist Nicolo Schira.

Schira wrote on X on Thursday: “Nicolo Tresoldi has decided not to respond to Italy National Team’s call for the Nations League’s Matches. He needs to have more time to take a final decision between Italy and Germany.”

The decision suggests the contest between Italy and Germany for the Club Brugge striker’s international allegiance remains unresolved. Earlier reports had indicated that Tresoldi was close to choosing Italy, but he has not yet committed himself to the Azzurri.

Tresoldi was born in Cagliari, Italy, but developed as a footballer in Germany after his family moved to Hanover. He came through the Hannover 96 academy before beginning his professional career with the club.

The 22-year-old holds both Italian and German nationality and has extensive experience with Germany’s youth teams. He represented Germany at under-19 level before progressing to the under-21 side, with whom he reached the final of the European Championship.

Tresoldi joined Club Brugge from Hannover 96 in summer 2025 and made an immediate impression in Belgium. He finished his first season with the club having scored 18 goals in 53 appearances.

His decision comes as both Italy and Germany prepare to begin a new era. Roberto Mancini has returned as Italy manager, while experienced coach Jurgen Klopp has taken charge of Germany, known as Die Mannschaft.
