Matthias Jaissle criticises ‘inconsistent’ refereeing after Newcastle yellow card

Matthias Jaissle has become involved in his first Premier League controversy as Newcastle United manager after just three matches in charge.

The German was booked during Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday, a result that marked their second draw in the opening three league fixtures.

Jaissle was cautioned in the 70th minute by referee Rob Jones for stepping outside his technical area. He had already received several warnings from the fourth official before the decision was made.

The booking made Jaissle the first manager to receive a yellow card in the current Premier League season. However, his frustration centred not only on the punishment itself but also on what he believes is an inconsistent application of the rules.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Jaissle said: “I was very clear about how frustrated I felt, and I showed that in many aspects.”

He added: “From my point of view, if you are 20 centimetres outside your technical area, encouraging and supporting your team in a positive and passionate way, I do not think that deserves a yellow card, especially when you look at some of my colleagues.”

Asked by a journalist whether he had seen other managers committing similar offences without receiving the same punishment, Jaissle responded with a laugh: “You can say that.”

The 37-year-old took charge of Newcastle at the start of the current season after spending three years in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ahli.

His first three Premier League games have produced one victory, against Tottenham, and draws with Liverpool and Bournemouth.

Jaissle has also guided Newcastle through the second and third rounds of the English League Cup. They beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 before securing a 1-0 victory over Millwall.

Despite the unbeaten start in cup competition, Newcastle have taken five points from their first three league matches, with the Bournemouth result extending the early run of draws under their new manager.
