Yaya Touré admits PSG were a class above Slovan Bratislava in Champions League clash

African football legend Yaya Touré admitted Paris Saint-Germain were in a different class after his Slovan Bratislava side suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat to the reigning European champions in the UEFA Champions League.

PSG began their title defence in dominant fashion at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, producing a commanding performance against the Slovakian side managed by the former Ivory Coast international.

Touré acknowledged the significant difference between the two teams after the match and said he learned a great deal from facing one of Europe’s leading sides.

Touré praises PSG’s quality

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Touré was frank about the challenge his team faced against Luis Enrique’s side.

“You’re playing against one of the best teams in the Champions League. In basically every aspect, they are a level above, and by some way, if we’re being honest. I learnt a lot today. Paris, in my opinion, I think they are close to winning this trophy again,” he began.

The former Manchester City midfielder also highlighted the individual quality available to PSG, pointing to the number of players from the French champions who have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

Touré said his players had given everything despite being unable to match their opponents.

“In their team, they have nine Ballon d’Or nominees. It is very, very difficult. I think that my players gave their maximum, but it wasn’t easy. The gap is considerable. When you play against a team that is better than you, you understand […] PSG tonight, it is one of the best teams that we will face. They’re impressive. [PSG] are a machine.”

The defeat marked a difficult Champions League outing for Touré, who is beginning to build his coaching career after an illustrious playing career.

The Ivorian was one of Africa’s most decorated midfielders during his playing days and won four Premier League titles with Manchester City, while also representing Barcelona and Olympiacos.

Now working from the technical area, Touré will hope the experience against PSG can help Slovan Bratislava as they continue their European campaign.
