Achraf Hakimi joins Samuel Eto’o among Africa’s leading Champions League players

Achraf Hakimi equalled Samuel Eto’o’s record of 78 Champions League appearances as Paris Saint-Germain began their campaign with a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava at Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

The Morocco international captained Luis Enrique’s side as they dominated the Slovakian visitors and secured a convincing victory. Hakimi’s appearance also marked a personal milestone, moving him into third place among African players with the most matches in the competition.

Hakimi, 27, came through the Real Madrid academy before playing for Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. His latest European outing brought him level with former Cameroon international Eto’o, according to figures provided by Stats Foot.

Only two players now stand above him in the African rankings. Former Cote d’Ivoire striker Didier Drogba is second with 92 Champions League appearances, while Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah remains top with 98.

The milestone adds to Hakimi’s growing influence at Paris Saint-Germain, where he wore the captain’s armband during the victory over Slovan Bratislava. His current market valuation is estimated at 80 million euros.

Hakimi’s contract with the Paris club runs until 30 June 2029. His annual salary is listed as 14,550,000 euros, equivalent to 9,457,500,000 FCFA in France.

The right-back’s progress has seen him establish himself as one of the most prominent African players in European football. By reaching 78 Champions League appearances, he has drawn level with Eto’o and moved within 14 matches of Drogba’s total.

Paris Saint-Germain will next play Stade Brestois in the fourth round of the French league season. The match follows their emphatic opening result in Europe and provides Hakimi with the opportunity to continue his run of appearances for the club.
