Real Madrid v Rayo Vallecano: Mbappe-backed hosts face test after early Liga setback

Real Madrid will look to recover from last week’s defeat by Real Betis when they host local rivals Rayo Vallecano at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, 12 September 2026 at 19:00 GMT.

The match comes on the fifth weekend of the Liga season, with Real Madrid already three points behind after four matches. Their need for victory is heightened by the strength of their expected title competition with FC Barcelona.

Nasser Eddy, a consultant for NCI Sport and presenter of the European Champions League on radio Nostalgie, has provided his assessment and betting selections for the fixture.

Real Madrid seeking consistency

Real Madrid beat Inter Milan 2-1 in their opening Champions League match on Tuesday, but the performance offered little reassurance. They had only about one-third of possession, while a vulnerable defence was repeatedly exposed and relied on an outstanding display from Thibaut Courtois.

Kylian Mbappe remains the main attacking threat, having scored four goals in four Liga appearances and another against Inter Milan. Real Madrid have registered exactly eight shots on target in four of their five competitive matches this season.

The side managed by Jose Mourinho have won all three of their home matches in all competitions this campaign. They have also not lost a Liga fixture at Bernabeu since 2 March, when they were beaten by Getafe.

Rayo’s away record a concern

Rayo Vallecano, 14th in the table, face a difficult short trip across Madrid. Their first victory of the season came last Saturday, when they beat Racing Santander 3-2 at home, but they have lost both of their away Liga matches.

The club finished eighth with 50 points last season, yet their current form suggests a possible battle against relegation. They have scored in every match but have conceded 10 goals in four league games, including five against FC Barcelona.

Pathe Ciss and his team-mates opened the scoring in each of their three matches without a win. Rayo have conceded four goals before half-time and six after the interval, while scoring four in the first half and three in the second.

Benat San Jose’s team can nevertheless draw encouragement from their attacking players. Sergio Camello has already scored five goals, matching his total for the whole of last season, and has recorded consecutive braces, including one against FC Barcelona. Unai Lopez has supplied three assists, two of them in the previous round, putting him joint second in the assist rankings.

Head-to-head record

Since 2011-12, Rayo Vallecano have beaten Real Madrid twice and drawn four times in 20 meetings. Real Madrid have won the other 14, including a memorable 10-2 victory in December 2015.

However, the gap has narrowed in recent seasons. Rayo drew 0-0 in last season’s first meeting before losing 2-1 at Bernabeu. None of the 13 encounters since the 2015 result has been decided by more than two goals.

Betting selections

Real Madrid are priced at 1.15 to win, while the combined selection of a home victory and both teams scoring is available at 2.45. Rayo Vallecano to score the opening goal is priced at 5.55, and both teams to score in both halves is 13.

Mbappe is priced at 1.2 to score at any time. Eddy expects Real Madrid to win but believes Rayo will score, making the 2.45 combination his preferred selection. The match is scheduled for 19:00 GMT on 12 September 2026. Odds may change.
