Tamer Mostafa emerges as leading candidate to replace Ahmed Khattab at Ghazl El Mahalla

Tamer Mostafa is the leading contender to become manager of Ghazl El Mahalla following the club’s formal decision to part company with Ahmed Khattab.

Ghazl El Mahalla confirmed Khattab’s departure after a run of results that had caused concern and frustration among the club’s supporters. FilGoal understands that talks with Mostafa have reached an advanced stage, with discussions focused on appointing him as the team’s new head coach.

The club is yet to make an official announcement, but Mostafa is currently considered the strongest candidate to take charge.

Mostafa’s most recent managerial role was with Al Ittihad Alexandria, where he remained in charge until April. He has also managed Al Qanah, Misr El Maqassah, El Gouna, Telecom Egypt, ENPPI, Modern Sport and Ismaily during his career.

The potential appointment comes as Ghazl El Mahalla have made their worst start to an Egyptian Premier League campaign for several seasons. They have collected only one point from their opening four matches, earning it from a draw with ENPPI.

The team lost their other three games against Pyramids FC, Modern Sport and National Bank of Egypt while Khattab was in charge.

That sequence has seen Ghazl El Mahalla match their poorest opening after four league rounds since the 2015-16 season. That campaign ended with the club being relegated to the second tier.

The club’s worst start on record came in the 2011-12 season, when they had no points after four matches. They had conceded 13 goals and scored only once during that run.

Ghazl El Mahalla also began last season with four consecutive goalless draws, collecting four points under manager Alaa Abdel Aal.

The club currently sit bottom of the table with one point from four games, increasing the pressure on the board to complete an agreement with Mostafa and begin preparations for the next league fixture.
