Barcelona turn from La Masia to Premier League in Champions League push

Barcelona have dramatically shifted away from their historic La Masia academy and towards the Premier League as they attempt to end an 11-year wait for Champions League success.

The Catalan club have not won Europe’s leading competition since 2015, despite having lifted the trophy five times, and have now adopted a radically different recruitment strategy. According to The Sun, sporting director Deco is overseeing a deliberate move away from relying primarily on home-grown talent.

That change has been particularly evident this summer, when an unprecedented number of La Masia graduates left Barcelona permanently. Jofre Torrents, Toni Fernandez, Alvaro Cortes, Guille Fernandez and Tommy Marquez have all departed for other clubs.

Barcelona have sought to protect their long-term interests in each case, including buy-back clauses and sell-on fees in the agreements that took the players away from the club.

The shift represents a significant departure from the philosophy traditionally associated with Barcelona, whose identity has long been closely connected to developing players through La Masia and promoting them into the first team.

Premier League recruitment

The club’s new approach builds on the successful loan spell of Marcus Rashford last season. The England forward scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions, although Barcelona were eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Rather than stopping there, Barcelona have gone further this summer by completing three high-profile moves from the Premier League.

Former Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has arrived for £69m, while Rodri has joined from Manchester City. Rodri is described as a Ballon d’Or winner and Spain’s best player at the World Cup. The club have also signed Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal.

Gordon and Rodri have been brought in specifically to become key members of Hansi Flick’s Barcelona side, with the club viewing their experience and quality as central to its attempt to compete for major European honours.

Jesus has already opened his goalscoring account in a Barcelona shirt, while Gordon has made an immediate impact in LaLiga.

The former Newcastle player has registered five assists in his first four league appearances of the new season. That is a record no player has achieved since Lionel Messi, another celebrated graduate of La Masia.

Gordon’s start has quickly made him a favourite among Barcelona supporters. After the club’s 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao two weeks ago, fans at Camp Nou chanted his name.

There is growing confidence within Barcelona that their Premier League additions can help take the club back to the summit of European football. Their Champions League campaign begins against Feyenoord, with hopes high that this could finally be the season in which Barcelona lift the trophy again.

The strategy marks one of the most substantial changes in direction during Joan Laporta’s leadership, with the club now placing its hopes of European glory on established Premier League talent rather than relying mainly on the academy that has shaped its footballing identity for generations.
