Egypt forward Trezeguet ruled out of Angola and South Sudan qualifiers

Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” will miss Egypt’s next two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches after Riyadh confirmed he will be sidelined for four weeks with a hamstring tear.

The Saudi club announced the injury on its official account on X on Wednesday, following medical tests carried out after the player was forced off during Riyadh’s match against Al-Khaleej on Monday.

Trezeguet sustained the injury in the sixth round of the Saudi Pro League. He left the pitch in tears after only 13 minutes, raising immediate concerns about his availability for Egypt’s forthcoming international fixtures.

Tests later confirmed that the former Aston Villa player had suffered a tear to his hamstring. He is now expected to return to Cairo, where he will continue his treatment with the Egypt national team’s medical staff.

The injury is a significant setback for Egypt manager Hossam Hassan, with Trezeguet expected to miss the national team’s next training camp. The camp is due to begin on 17 September and will precede two important qualifying matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt are scheduled to host Angola at Cairo Stadium on Friday, 25 September. They will then travel to Juba to face South Sudan on Tuesday, 29 September.

Trezeguet has established himself as one of Egypt’s leading attacking players and is regarded as an important member of the Pharaohs’ squad because of his extensive experience at international level. His absence will leave Hassan without one of his most experienced attacking options for both matches.

Riyadh’s announcement stated that the player would be unavailable for four weeks. The club’s social media post was accompanied by a message confirming: “The player Mahmoud Trezeguet suffered a hamstring tear, which will keep him out for four weeks.”

The timing leaves Egypt with limited scope to include him in preparations for the two qualifiers. His recovery will instead be monitored in Cairo alongside the medical team responsible for the national side.

Egypt’s fixtures against Angola and South Sudan form the next stage of their campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Trezeguet’s confirmed absence means Hassan must now prepare for the matches without one of the squad’s most recognisable attacking figures, while the player begins his rehabilitation following the injury sustained in Riyadh’s league meeting with Al-Khaleej.
