Real Betis mock Mbappe family after Ethan’s Champions League red card

Real Betis have used their Champions League victory over Lille to mock Kylian Mbappe and his younger brother Ethan after the 19-year-old was sent off in the French side’s defeat.

Betis won 3-2 against Lille on Tuesday in the opening round of the Champions League league phase, with Ethan Mbappe shown a red card during the second half.

The Spanish club’s official account on X posted the message: “Every time someone in the Mbappe family hears the words Real Betis”, alongside a satirical image of actor Willem Dafoe from the film At Eternity’s Gate.

The post referred to Betis’ recent meeting with Kylian Mbappe, when the Andalusian side defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in the fourth round of La Liga. Mbappe missed a penalty in the closing stages of that match.

For Ethan, the dismissal brought a difficult end to his first European appearance. He helped create Lille’s opening goal before being sent off at a time when his team were trying to recover from a two-goal deficit.

Ethan was shown the red card in the 56th minute. The incident meant his involvement in the match was reduced to only 44 minutes, as his night changed from contributing to Lille’s attack to leaving them with 10 players.

The match itself produced five goals. Ouida put Lille ahead before Mark Bartra equalised for Betis. Alex Sandro then gave the Spanish side the lead before half-time.

Bartra scored his second goal after the interval to strengthen Betis’ position, while Troy Parrott completed the scoring and secured a 3-2 victory for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

The result gives Betis a winning start to the league phase and adds another memorable chapter to their recent meetings with the Mbappe family. Their social-media post drew attention to both Ethan’s dismissal and Kylian’s missed penalty against the club.

Betis will now prepare for their second Champions League fixture, when they face Porto on 14 October. The match will be played at Estadio Benito Villamarin in Seville.

A video about the contrasting fortunes of Mbappe and his brother during the Champions League night also focused on the same irony: Ethan went from helping Lille score to being sent off, while Kylian’s most recent meeting with Betis ended with Real Madrid beaten and the forward missing a late penalty.
