Egyptian Premier League 2026-27: fixtures, standings and where to watch

The Egyptian Premier League will begin on Friday, 21 August 2026, with 20 clubs competing in a new format that will eventually reduce the number of teams in the top flight.

The Egyptian Professional Clubs Association has confirmed that every team will play 19 matches in the opening phase, producing 190 fixtures before the league splits into two final groups.

The first phase is scheduled to run until 20 February 2027. Matches will normally kick off at 17:00 and 20:00 local time, although fixtures will move to 21:30 during Ramadan to take account of fasting, sunset and supporters’ access to stadiums.

After the opening phase, the six highest-ranked teams will form the championship group. They will play one another home and away, with 15 further matches deciding the Egyptian Premier League champions and determining qualification for the Confederation of African Football’s Champions League and Confederation Cup.

The remaining 14 clubs, finishing from seventh to 20th, will contest the relegation group. That section is expected to contain 91 matches, with four teams eventually relegated to the Professional League.

Only three clubs will be promoted from the second tier, meaning the 2027-28 Egyptian Premier League is expected to feature 19 teams as part of a gradual reduction in the size of the competition.

The final phase is due to start on 8 March 2027, with the league season expected to conclude in May 2027, when the champions will officially receive the trophy.

Egyptian football has traditionally been dominated by Al Ahly, Zamalek SC and Pyramids FC. Pyramids FC’s victory in the 2024-25 CAF Champions League, together with their strong challenge in the most recent campaign, has led to suggestions that a new “Egyptian triangle of terror” is emerging alongside the established description of the country’s “two football giants”.

The 2025-26 season produced a closely fought contest between Zamalek SC, Pyramids FC and Al Ahly, with Zamalek SC securing the title on the final matchday.

There will also be a notable absence in the 2026-27 competition. Ismaily SC have been relegated for only the second time in their history and for the first time in 68 years. Their previous relegation came in 1957-58.
