Erling Haaland scores twice as Manchester City overcome FC Porto in UEFA Champions League opener
Erling Haaland struck twice to give Manchester City a winning start against FC Porto on the opening matchday of the UEFA Champions League.
The Norway striker broke the deadlock in the 47th minute before scoring again in the 90th minute, giving Manchester City the decisive advantage and ensuring the result was beyond FC Porto’s reach.
Manchester City had to withstand a period of pressure from their opponents after Haaland’s first goal. FC Porto pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Williams Gomes and his team-mates attempting to find a way through the Manchester City defence.
However, those efforts did not produce a goal. Manchester City responded by looking to attack on the counter, trying to exploit the spaces created as FC Porto committed players forward. Porto’s defence dealt effectively with those attempts and prevented the English side from creating a further breakthrough before the closing stages.
The second goal eventually arrived in the final minute of normal time. Following a corner delivered by Anderson, Rayan Ait-Nouri redirected the ball towards Haaland, who finished at the far post to complete his brace.
That goal settled the contest and gave Manchester City an important result in their first UEFA Champions League match of the campaign. Haaland’s two finishes proved decisive after FC Porto had threatened to make the game more difficult following the opening goal.
For FC Porto, the defeat marked a setback on their return to European competition after a three-year absence. Their attempts to respond after falling behind were ultimately unsuccessful, despite the pressure they applied to Manchester City during the second half.
Manchester City’s ability to absorb that pressure and then capitalise on a late opportunity was central to the outcome. Haaland’s contribution provided the difference, with his first goal opening the game and his second removing any remaining uncertainty over the result.
The victory places the focus on Haaland’s clinical finishing after he converted the two key opportunities that came his way. FC Porto, meanwhile, must recover from a difficult return to the European stage after being unable to turn their attacking pressure into goals.
