Real Madrid and Manchester City make winning starts in 2026-27 Champions League

The league phase of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League began on Tuesday with six matches, as Real Madrid beat Inter Milan 2-1 and Manchester City defeated FC Porto 2-0.

Real Madrid secured victory against Inter Milan through goals from Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde. Manchester City also opened their campaign with a win, Erling Haaland scoring twice in the 2-0 victory over FC Porto.

The two sides were among four winners on the opening night, with Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa, Real Betis and AEK Athens also taking three points.

Borussia Dortmund edged a five-goal contest against Villarreal, winning 3-2. Aston Villa recorded the same scoreline away to Club Brugge in another closely fought match.

Real Betis came from behind to defeat Lille 3-2 in France, while AEK Athens claimed the narrowest victory of the evening, beating LASK 1-0.

The results marked the start of the league phase of the 2026-27 competition. Six fixtures were played on Tuesday, producing 17 goals across the opening round of matches.

Real Madrid’s 2-1 success over Inter Milan was one of the evening’s headline results. Mbappe and Valverde were the scorers for the Spanish club, while the result gave them a winning start against the Italian side.

Manchester City’s victory was more comfortable on the scoreline, with Haaland providing both goals in the 2-0 win over FC Porto. The Norwegian striker’s double ensured Manchester City began their league-phase campaign with maximum points.

Dortmund and Villarreal provided one of the night’s most competitive games, with Dortmund emerging 3-2 winners. Aston Villa also prevailed by a single goal in a high-scoring encounter at Club Brugge.

There was a similar outcome in France, where Real Betis overturned Lille’s advantage to win 3-2. AEK Athens completed the night’s results with a 1-0 victory over LASK.
