Lille edge Real Betis in Champions League thriller at half-time

Lille lead Real Betis 2-1 at half-time in the opening matchday of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.

The French side produced a fast-paced and attacking first-half display in front of their home supporters, taking the lead twice despite Real Betis having the greater overall share of the attacking statistics.

Lille’s headline signing Ayase Ueda opened the scoring after 12 minutes, finishing a move created by a perfectly weighted pass from Ethan Mbappe. The early goal rewarded the hosts’ positive approach and gave them the advantage during an energetic opening period.

Real Betis responded before the interval. Andalusian defender Marc Bartra rose to head the Spanish side level in the 33rd minute, ensuring Lille’s early lead lasted for only 21 minutes.

The visitors’ equaliser did not change the momentum for long, however. Lille restored their advantage just three minutes later when Alexsandro powered a header beyond the Real Betis defence to make it 2-1.

The goal completed a dramatic spell in which both sides found the net twice, but Lille went into the interval ahead after making the most of their limited opportunities in front of goal.

Davide Ancelotti’s players have recorded 54% possession according to the match statistics. Real Betis have also attempted more shots overall, with eight compared with Lille’s five.

Despite that numerical advantage for the Spanish side, Lille have been significantly more clinical. The French club have converted both of their shots on target in the first half, underlining the efficiency that has kept them in front at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Real Betis have therefore had more attempts but trail at half-time, while Lille’s direct attacking play and finishing have given the hosts the advantage in the opening game of their Champions League league-phase campaign.

The scoreline reflects a lively first 45 minutes in which Lille have combined attacking intent with ruthless finishing. Ueda’s early goal and Alexsandro’s powerful header have twice put the home side in control, while Bartra’s effort has kept Real Betis within one goal of their opponents.

With the second half still to come, Lille hold a narrow lead over Real Betis after a first period featuring three goals, a high tempo and a clear contrast between the visitors’ greater shot volume and the hosts’ superior accuracy.
