Morocco international Adel Taarabt announces retirement from football

Morocco international Adel Taarabt has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 37, bringing an end to a long career that took him from Lens to Sharjah and included spells at some of Europe’s leading clubs.

Taarabt confirmed the decision in a statement published on his Instagram account on Tuesday. The experienced midfielder said he had reached the point where he was ready to close the chapter on his playing career.

“I knew this day would come; the time has come to turn the page. Football has been a huge part of my life for many years; it has given me wonderful memories, allowed me to meet amazing people and experience moments I will never forget,” Taarabt wrote.

The Morocco international also thanked the clubs, coaches, team-mates and staff members who had been part of his career, as well as the supporters who had backed him throughout his time in the game.

“I would like to thank every club I played for, every coach, team-mate and member of the technical and administrative staff, and of course every fan who showered me with love throughout this journey,” he said.

Taarabt added: “To every club I had the honour of representing, from Lens to Sharjah: thank you for being part of my story. Representing Morocco will always hold a special place in my heart.”

In reflecting on his career, the former attacking midfielder acknowledged that it had included both difficult periods and memorable successes.

“I have experienced beautiful moments and difficult ones, made mistakes and lived through wonderful nights… I experienced everything. But it was my journey, and I would not change anything about it. Praise be to God in all circumstances,” he said.

Taarabt began his football development with Lens and established a reputation in Europe through his exceptional dribbling ability and creativity on the ball. His individual skill made him a notable figure during the early stages of his career and helped him move on to a series of prominent clubs.

Following an impressive period with Queens Park Rangers, he stepped up to the highest level of European football. He subsequently played for Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Genoa and Benfica before finishing his career with Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

At international level, Taarabt made 30 appearances for Morocco and scored four goals. The national team remained an important part of his career, a point he emphasised in his retirement statement.

His announcement formally closes a playing journey that began at Lens and continued through England, Italy, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates. Across those stops, Taarabt was remembered for his technique, dribbling and distinctive style, while his own message focused on gratitude towards the many people and clubs who shaped his career.
