Mamadou Sarr earns praise from Matarazzo after Real Sociedad debut

Senegal defender Mamadou Sarr earned praise from Real Sociedad coach Pellegrino Matarazzo after making his long-awaited debut in Monday’s 3-2 victory over Elche.

Sarr, who joined the Spanish club on loan from Chelsea during the summer, had remained on the bench since his arrival before finally being handed his first start against Elche.

The young defender was selected from the beginning as Real Sociedad secured an important away victory, and his display appears to have made a positive impression on Matarazzo.

The coach acknowledged that Sarr needed some time to adjust to the intensity of the match after spending a period without playing, but was pleased with what he saw from the Senegalese defender.

Matarazzo also revealed that Sarr told him at half-time that he would eventually need to be substituted because of his physical condition.

The Real Sociedad coach nevertheless felt the defender still had something to offer when the decision was made to make a double substitution.

Sarr was eventually taken off as part of the changes, with Matarazzo explaining that the player had shown enough during his time on the pitch to leave him satisfied with the performance.

Speaking about Sarr’s display against Elche, Matarazzo said: “Yes, there were certainly moments when you could see he needed a little time to adapt to the match. He hadn’t played for quite a while, but I think he did very well. At halftime, he was tired. I told him, ‘You still have ten minutes.’ You could also see that Gonçalo Guedes was very tired.

That’s when we had to make a double substitution, even though I felt Mamadou Sarr still had some energy left. At halftime, he warned me that he would have to come off at some point. But I’m satisfied with his performance: physically strong, good defensive interventions, and comfortable on the ball. Despite a few minor errors, I think he delivered a very solid performance.”

Matarazzo highlighted several aspects of Sarr’s game, particularly his physical strength, defensive work and ability to remain composed when in possession.

The coach also admitted there were some small mistakes during the defender’s first appearance, but they did not overshadow what he considered a strong overall performance.

For Sarr, the appearance brought an end to his wait for competitive action with Real Sociedad following his summer loan move from Chelsea.

Having spent the opening period of his time at the club on the bench, the Senegalese defender finally received his opportunity against Elche and made a positive impression despite his limited recent playing time.

His performance in the 3-2 win gives Sarr a promising start to his time on loan and provides Matarazzo with another defensive option as the season continues.

The Real Sociedad coach’s assessment suggests that, despite needing time to regain his rhythm, Sarr showed qualities that could make him an important option for the team.
