FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Moses Aduku insists Falconets will reach knockout stages after Spain defeat

Nigeria U-20 head coach Moses Aduku remains confident the Falconets can recover from their disappointing start to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup despite a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F fixture.

The West Africans were beaten by the reigning European champions after Marisa Garcia and Alba Cerrato scored once in each half to give Spain all three points.

Aduku was left frustrated by Nigeria’s display, admitting his side failed to produce the performance expected of them against a strong Spanish team.

“We did not come to the party today; we did not play,” Aduku told FIFA.com after the final whistle.

Aduku confident of knockout qualification

Despite the setback, the Nigerian coach refused to lose faith in his team’s chances of progressing from the group.

Nigeria still have two matches to play and Aduku believes those fixtures provide an opportunity for the Falconets to correct their mistakes and revive their campaign.

“But all the same, we have two more games to play; we will get it right. Of course, we are going to go through (to the knockout rounds),” he said.

The defeat leaves Nigeria needing a strong response in their remaining Group F games. Aduku will now turn his attention to addressing the shortcomings that allowed Spain to control the contest and secure a comfortable victory.

Falconets face fight to stay alive

Spain established control early and eventually broke the deadlock through Garcia before Cerrato added a second goal after the interval.

Nigeria struggled to impose themselves on the match, with Aduku acknowledging that the Falconets failed to reproduce the level of football required at the tournament.

“I am confident. We did not play today,” he added.

The result puts greater importance on Nigeria’s remaining group fixtures, where they will need improved performances and positive results to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.

Aduku, however, remains convinced that the opening defeat will not define Nigeria’s campaign. With two opportunities still available, the coach is backing his players to respond and deliver the results required to advance.

The Falconets will therefore enter their next Group F match under pressure but with their qualification hopes still within reach.
