Gianni Infantino reported to FIFA ethics body over Trump links

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been reported to the governing body’s Ethics Committee over allegations that his relationship with US President Donald Trump breached football’s rules on political neutrality.

The complaint was filed by British human rights organisation FairSquare, which alleges that Infantino’s conduct amounted to an abuse of power and violated FIFA’s code of ethics.

FairSquare’s submission focuses on eight alleged incidents, including FIFA’s decision to award Trump a Peace Prize, public expressions of support for the US president, and backing for Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The organisation also cites links between FIFA and organisations connected to Trump as part of its case.

FairSquare argues that the cumulative effect of those actions raises questions about whether Infantino remained within the political neutrality expected of FIFA officials.

The complaint has intensified scrutiny of the FIFA president’s relationship with Trump, which has attracted attention in football and political circles in recent years.

Critics say the issue extends beyond individual meetings or awards and instead concerns the extent to which the head of world football’s governing body should engage in political matters.

If the Ethics Committee were to uphold the allegations, Infantino could face sanctions, including a ban of up to two years.

FIFA has not publicly responded to the complaint.
