Gerard Pique reignites Real Madrid refereeing debate with social media attack

Gerard Pique has reopened one of Spanish football’s most enduring arguments after claiming refereeing decisions have historically favoured Real Madrid.

The former Barcelona defender responded to a provocative TikTok user, using a video message to defend his old club and revisit controversial incidents involving Real Madrid in major European finals.

The exchange began when a social media user wrote: “There is only one way for Barcelona to win, and we know it very well” – an apparent reference to refereeing.

Pique answered directly and delivered a sharp defence of Barcelona’s achievements.

“Yes, there is only one way for Barcelona to win, and that is by playing great football. That is why we are famous,” he said.

“We have won many league titles, many Champions League titles and many trebles by playing great football. You always bring up the referees, and if you want, I will remind you.”

He then turned the argument towards Real Madrid, citing decisions he believes went in their favour during important matches.

“I will remind you of the Champions League final against Juventus, Predrag Mijatovic’s goal, which was illegal,” Pique said.

“Or in one of the two finals against Atletico Madrid, Sergio Ramos’ goal was offside, and it was also illegal.”

Pique concluded with the claim likely to generate the strongest reaction from Real Madrid supporters.

“So, there are many refereeing mistakes, but usually and historically, these mistakes have tended slightly in favour of Real Madrid,” he said.

The comments were shared widely on social media, alongside footage of Pique speaking in Spanish. They add to a long list of public statements in which the former Barcelona player has defended the Catalan club and criticised their biggest rivals, even several years after ending his playing career.

Pique has long been known for his willingness to engage in debate online, and his latest intervention quickly placed him at the centre of another dispute between Barcelona and Real Madrid supporters. His remarks referred to three of the most discussed incidents in recent Champions League history: Mijatovic’s goal for Real Madrid against Juventus, and Sergio Ramos’ goal in a final against Atletico Madrid.

He ended the video in his typically sarcastic style, switching from a heated football argument to a more familiar sign-off.

“Anyway, I hope you are all well. I send you a big hug, and enjoy your day,” Pique said.
