Wolves sign free agent Bertrand Traore on deal until 2027

Wolves have completed the signing of former Sunderland forward Bertrand Traore as a free agent, with the 31-year-old agreeing a contract that runs until the end of the 2026-27 season.

The move gives Traore a fresh opportunity in England as he looks to revive his career and put himself in contention for Burkina Faso’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Cesar Peixoto had already indicated that Wolves were looking to strengthen their options out wide after making a respectable start to the season in the Championship. His side have collected eight points from their opening five matches.

Speaking after Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Birmingham City, Peixoto made clear that recruiting a winger was among his priorities. Reports had suggested that discussions with Traore were already at an advanced stage, with the player also believed to have spent time at Wolves’ training ground before the agreement was confirmed.

Traore arrives with extensive experience of English football. The left-footed forward previously played for Chelsea, Aston Villa and Sunderland, giving him a detailed knowledge of the demands and pace of the game in England.

His latest spell with Sunderland was less productive than he would have wanted. During an inconsistent Premier League season with the Black Cats, Traore made 12 appearances, but started only three matches and scored once.

He will now attempt to establish himself at Wolves and provide Peixoto with another attacking option as the club continue their Championship campaign. His contract will keep him at Molineux through the end of the 2026-27 season.

The timing of the transfer could also be significant at international level. Burkina Faso are due to begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with matches against Benin on 25 September and Central African Republic on 28 September.

Whether Traore will be involved in those fixtures remains to be decided. He has won 91 caps for Burkina Faso and will hope his return to regular club football can strengthen his case for selection.

For now, his immediate focus is on adapting to life at Wolves and making an impact under Peixoto. The manager’s search for a winger has ended with the arrival of a player who has already operated at Chelsea, Aston Villa and Sunderland, but who is seeking a new start after a difficult season with the Black Cats.
