Trezeguet injury raises Egypt fears after Al-Riyadh winger leaves in tears

Al-Riyadh forward Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet suffered a fresh injury scare before Egypt’s next international camp after being forced off in the 14th minute of Monday’s Saudi Pro League match against Al-Khaleej.

The game was still goalless when Trezeguet was hurt following a strong challenge from Al-Khaleej midfielder Boubacar Kouyate. The Egypt international remained on the pitch for approximately two minutes before Al-Riyadh’s medical staff decided he could not continue.

Trezeguet appeared visibly distressed as he left the field in tears, with members of the Al-Riyadh coaching staff offering him support. The early substitution has raised concerns about whether he will be fit to join Egypt for their forthcoming fixtures.

According to the Saudi sports newspaper Al Riyadiyah, Trezeguet’s latest problem is to the same area that previously kept him out of action – his hamstring. The player is expected to undergo medical examinations and scans in the coming hours, with the tests intended to establish the precise nature of the injury, its severity and the possible length of his absence from training and competitive matches.

The timing is particularly difficult for the 30-year-old, who had been expected to receive a call-up for Egypt’s next training camp. The Pharaohs are scheduled to face Angola and South Sudan on 25 and 29 September respectively in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Trezeguet missed Al-Riyadh’s previous match against Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League because of a hamstring injury. Al-Riyadh were beaten 5-0 in that game, and Monday’s setback came shortly after the Egyptian had returned to the team.

The match against Al-Khaleej was Trezeguet’s sixth appearance for Al-Riyadh this season across the Saudi Pro League and the King’s Cup. He has scored once in the league and provided two assists, one in the league and one in the cup.

Before the match, Al-Riyadh had collected five points and occupied 12th place in the Saudi Pro League table. Al-Khaleej had four points and sat 13th. The final result of the game was not stated in the report.

Al-Riyadh’s next fixture is scheduled for Sunday, when they are due to face Al-Kholood. Trezeguet’s availability for that match, as well as Egypt’s September internationals, will depend on the results of the forthcoming scans and the medical assessment of his latest hamstring problem.
