Brahim Hemdani reportedly set to stay as Algeria boss until 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

Brahim Hemdani is reportedly set to remain in charge of Algeria beyond the September international break, despite initial suggestions that his appointment was only temporary.

Hemdani was officially placed in charge of the national team this weekend after leading Algeria’s under-23 side to success at the Mediterranean Games. However, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has not made the length of his contract clear, prompting uncertainty over whether he would be judged after the team’s next round of fixtures.

Statements from the FAF have indicated that Hemdani could be serving on an interim basis. Under that interpretation, Algeria’s matches in September would provide a significant test, with the coach’s future dependent on whether his results were considered satisfactory.

The Fennecs are due to begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with matches against Zambia and Burundi. They will face Zambia in Tizi Ouzou on 25 September before travelling to Bujumbura to play Burundi four days later, on 29 September.

Algeria will then host Niger in a friendly at Tizi Ouzou on 6 October.

However, according to football insider Imad Mostefai, Hemdani is expected to keep his position regardless of the results achieved during that period. The 48-year-old is reported to have completed a contract running until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with a minimum target of reaching the semi-finals.

The arrangement would give Hemdani the opportunity to oversee Algeria throughout the qualification campaign and into the tournament itself, rather than making his position dependent on a small number of early fixtures.

He is expected to be supported by a coaching team that includes former Algeria international Anthar Yahia as assistant manager. Nasser Daineche will serve as fitness coach, while Nasredine Berarma will take responsibility for the goalkeepers.

A further Algeria international is also expected to join the staff from November.

The appointment of a largely Algerian coaching group reflects a desire to place people familiar with the country’s footballing identity around Hemdani as he begins the task of rebuilding the national side.

That group will be expected to help Algeria recover from what was described as a disastrous 2026 World Cup campaign. The team were eliminated in the last 16 after losing 2-0 to Switzerland, ending their involvement at the first knockout stage.

For now, the FAF’s public messaging continues to leave some doubt over the precise terms of Hemdani’s appointment. But the reported agreement would represent a significant commitment to the 48-year-old and suggest that the federation already views him as the coach capable of leading Algeria to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with a semi-final place set as the minimum objective.
