Lyon confirm Karim Benzema return blocked by contract issues

Olympique Lyonnais have addressed speculation surrounding a potential return for Karim Benzema, confirming that initial contacts were made but ultimately collapsed due to contractual complications.

The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner, now a free agent after leaving Al-Hilal, was reportedly willing to rejoin his boyhood club for a minimal fee, sparking excitement among supporters.

Sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean acknowledged the discussions during a press conference, describing the idea as “almost a dream.” He revealed that an intermediary approached Lyon over the summer, but the deal could not progress. “There was contact with an intermediary this summer. It did not happen: it was impossible due to contractual issues,” Louis-Jean said, according to Calciomercato.

The main obstacle was Benzema’s ongoing commitment to the Saudi Football Federation, which complicated any move back to France. Louis-Jean explained that the club chose not to push further once the contractual reality became clear. “He is still under contract with the Federation, so we did not insist. He is an extraordinary player, but I made no progress and I did not even speak to him,” he added.

Instead, Lyon focused on an alternative target in Belgian forward Lois Openda, who joined on loan from Juventus for €3.5 million. Head coach Paulo Fonseca prioritised Openda’s pace and profile, shifting attention away from Benzema as the window progressed.
