Real Madrid’s £108m signing Yan Diomande faces early scrutiny

Yan Diomande has yet to start a match for Real Madrid since joining for 125m euros (£108m) before add-ons, and the 19-year-old winger is already facing criticism in Spain after a subdued introduction to life at the club.

The Cote d’Ivoire international came on during Friday’s 1-0 defeat by Real Betis, Real Madrid’s first loss of the Liga season, but was unable to give Jose Mourinho’s side the attacking spark they needed.

Diomande played for 26 minutes and had little influence on the game. By contrast, the determination and energy shown by young forward Carlos Espi were noted despite Real Madrid’s defeat.

That contrast has intensified the first doubts about the most expensive signing of the summer at Real Madrid.

Speaking on Cadena SER, journalist Antonio Romero questioned the winger’s performance.

«Il n’a pas l’impact qu’on attend d’un joueur aussi cher. (…) Il n’a pas demande le ballon», Romero said, adding that Diomande had «pratiquement pas touche la balle».

His colleague Julio Pulido was similarly critical, arguing that Diomande had not yet had the influence expected from a player recruited for such a substantial fee. The comparison with Espi, who arrived with considerably less pressure but played «avec plus d’intention», did little to help the Ivorian’s cause.

The concerns are not entirely new. Diomande’s first official appearance for Real Madrid had already been viewed as too cautious, despite showing some encouraging qualities.

He has featured in each of the opening four Liga fixtures, but only as a substitute. Across 83 minutes, he has scored no goals, provided no assists and failed to attempt a shot.

His limited involvement under Mourinho had already prompted questions. Every appearance has lasted less than 30 minutes, meaning he has not yet been given an extended opportunity to establish himself in the team.

At the same time, the size of his transfer fee has placed him under immediate scrutiny. Each appearance has become a test for a player who is only 19 and is adapting to a new club, a new manager and a demanding environment.

The criticism should, however, be viewed in context. Diomande faces fierce competition for places in an attack that includes Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and several other full internationals. His opportunities have consequently been limited, and it may be unrealistic to expect him to have the same influence as an established starter after so little playing time.

Diomande was one of the breakthrough players of last season in Germany and became one of Cote d’Ivoire’s most notable performers at the 2026 World Cup. Those qualities have not disappeared in the space of a few weeks.

His pace, dribbling ability and unpredictability remain significant assets for both Real Madrid and the Elephants. But a transfer worth 125m euros rarely buys a player much patience, particularly at a club of Real Madrid’s stature.

The pressure is made greater by Diomande becoming the most expensive African player in history this summer, even though the financial figure was not his responsibility.

He will now be expected to show more initiative, demand the ball and demonstrate that he can cope with the attention surrounding his fee. Mourinho is reported to be taking a patient approach with him, but is considering giving the winger his first start against Inter in the Champions League on Tuesday.
