Former Egypt national team coach Ayman Abdelaziz revealed the immediate response of Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria after the Egyptian Football Association’s decision to terminate his contract following the team’s exit from the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, following a defeat against Congo.
Speaking in a televised interview on Egyptian channel “MBC Egypt,” Abdelaziz stated, “Vitoria is shocked and surprised that a country as prominent as Egypt would make hasty and reactionary decisions without considering the future.
The football association seems to be influenced by public opinion rather than thinking ahead.”
He further remarked, “Such rapid reactions can be detrimental, especially considering that the Egyptian national team is facing challenging stages in the World Cup qualifiers.”
The Portuguese coach, who took charge of the Egypt national team in September 2022, was relieved of his duties after the disappointing performance in the Africa Cup of Nations, failing to meet the expectations of fans and officials alike.
Vitoria’s tenure saw mixed results, with notable victories alongside unexpected losses, culminating in the team’s elimination from the continental tournament in the early stages.
The decision to part ways with Vitoria reflects the Egyptian Football Association’s desire to steer the national team in a new direction ahead of crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
While Vitoria’s departure marks the end of a chapter in Egyptian football, speculation now surrounds the appointment of a new head coach who can lead the team through the challenges ahead and restore the nation’s pride on the international stage.
