Julian Alvarez shows renewed spark in Atletico Madrid training

Julian Alvarez displayed a noticeably different attitude in Atletico Madrid training on Monday, suggesting the Argentina forward is gradually recovering his sharpness after a difficult period that included his desire to leave for Barcelona.

Atletico returned to work in Majadahonda for the first time since their league meeting with Athletic Bilbao. All of Diego Simeone’s squad were available apart from the injured Alexander Sørloth.

As is customary at Atletico, the session was divided according to players’ involvement in the previous match. Those who started against the Basque side completed recovery exercises, while substitutes and players who did not feature took part in a more demanding workout.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Simeone used the session to arrange a training match focused on pressing, winning back possession and moving the ball quickly.

Alvarez was used in attack alongside Jonathan David, with Koke operating in midfield. The defensive line consisted of Dominguez, Cuti, Le Normand and Dani Martinez.

The training match offered a clear indication that Alvarez is displaying a different version of himself compared with only a few weeks ago. The forward moved freely, actively sought possession and dropped deeper to receive the ball rather than remaining isolated in the attacking line.

He also scored an impressive goal from an attack similar to one he produced at San Mames. The moment underlined the greater involvement and confidence he showed throughout the session.

Alvarez continued working after the main exercise had ended, completing additional drills with one of Atletico’s fitness coaches. While his team-mates carried out stretching exercises, the striker completed a series of runs as he continues his gradual return to full physical condition.

His approach was also evident in the atmosphere around the session. Alvarez appeared serious and focused, while voices could be heard encouraging him during the training work.

The change comes after what was described as a major crisis for the player, following his insistence on moving to Barcelona. Atletico rejected that possibility firmly, leaving Alvarez to continue his career in Madrid.

The latest session therefore provided a positive sign for Simeone, with Alvarez showing greater movement, involvement and determination as he works towards regaining his best level.
