Rodri emerges as Barcelona’s missing piece after impressive Mestalla debut

Rodri has quickly shown why Barcelona believed they needed him, producing an outstanding first start for the club at Mestalla despite not having been regarded as one of their expected transfer targets.

The 30-year-old Spain international was brought into Barcelona’s plans by sporting director Deco while uncertainty surrounded Real Madrid. At the same time, Barcelona were pursuing a deal for Julian Alvarez.

Pedri said after the match: “It is always said that Rodri and I do not work well together, but the truth is that it is very comfortable to play alongside him, and we will understand each other extremely well.”

The pair constantly adjusted their positions during the opening stages. His composure provides the balance Barcelona need in a side that prefers to play at speed. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, the player best equipped to slow the rhythm and control the tempo can give the forwards greater freedom to make their runs. Flick praised the midfielder’s influence, saying: “Everything Rodri does has meaning.” He added that the situation was “a good thing for Bernal”.

“Rodri is an amazing player, not only on the pitch but also in the dressing room,” Flick said. “He is a true leader in every sense of the word.”
