Gatti’s late header denies Milan and Ruben Amorim a record-breaking start

Federico Gatti scored in stoppage time to earn Juventus a 1-1 draw against Milan at Allianz Stadium and deny Ruben Amorim the chance to make history with the Rossoneri.

Alfadjo Cisse had put Milan ahead in the second half, but Gatti headed Juventus level in the 92nd minute after a cross from Teun Koopmeiners.

The result was the third consecutive draw between Juventus and Milan. It also ended Amorim’s hopes of becoming the first Milan manager since 1958 to win each of his opening three Serie A matches in charge.

Milan remain fourth with seven points, while Juventus are immediately behind them on the same total. Roma, Inter and Como lead the standings with perfect records.

The match was decided by players who had started on the bench. Samuel Chukwueze created Milan’s goal after coming on as a substitute, delivering the cross that Cisse collected before sending a low shot into the left corner.

Koopmeiners, also introduced from the bench, supplied the ball for Juventus’ equaliser. His cross was met by Gatti, whose powerful header went through the middle of the goal and was beyond Mike Maignan.

Juventus improve after quiet opening

The first half produced little attacking threat, with only one clear opportunity.

That chance fell to Francisco Conceicao in the 38th minute. The Juventus player cut inside the penalty area, but Maignan made the save to keep Milan level.

Milan failed to register a single shot on target before the interval, while Juventus came close again 10 minutes after the restart when Conceicao’s effort struck the left post.

Amorim responded by making three substitutions as he attempted to change the course of the match. The changes initially appeared to have the desired effect when Chukwueze found Cisse three minutes later.

Cisse controlled the delivery before firing a low effort towards the goalkeeper’s left, giving Milan the lead with their only shot on target in the entire match.

Juventus continued to search for a response but were unable to create another clear chance until the closing stages.

Then, in the second minute of added time, Koopmeiners delivered into the penalty area. Gatti rose to meet the cross and directed his header into the centre of the goal.

Maignan could not prevent the late equaliser, leaving Milan with a point rather than a third straight victory under Amorim. Juventus also extended their unbeaten run against Milan to three successive draws, although neither side could take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen its position near the top of the table.
