Ecuador punish Ghana’s slow start to take control of U20 Women’s World Cup tie

Ecuador lead Ghana 2-0 at half-time in their opening match of the U20 Women’s World Cup at Sosnowiec Arena on Sunday, 6 September 2026.

The South Americans made an outstanding start in this Group C encounter, scoring twice inside the opening 17 minutes to put themselves in a commanding position. Ghana, known as the Black Princesses, have created pressure in response but have been unable to convert their opportunities.

Ecuador opened the scoring after only four minutes. R. Flores finished from a chance created by Moran Gurumendi, giving Ghana an early setback before they had been able to settle into the match.

The advantage was doubled in the 17th minute when Arboleda found the net. Ecuador’s quick and clinical beginning has given them a significant lead in the first fixture of the competition’s opening day.

Ghana now face a demanding second half and will need to improve their accuracy if they are to change the course of the match. The team has the attacking tools to unsettle Ecuador’s back line, but must be considerably more composed in the decisive moments.

The remaining 45 minutes are therefore set up to be an intense test for the Ghanaian side. The Black Princesses will have to commit fully to the fight for a way back into the contest while also dealing with the danger posed by an Ecuador team that has already demonstrated its attacking realism.

At the break, however, Ecuador’s rapid start and clinical finishing have left Ghana with a two-goal deficit to overturn in their Group C opener.
