MCA frustrated as ASN Nigelec keep CAF Champions League tie finely poised

ASN Nigelec and MC Alger were locked at 0-0 at half-time in the first leg of their CAF Champions League first preliminary round tie in Niamey.

The opening 45 minutes at the Seyni Kountche Stadium produced a closely contested encounter, with neither side able to break the deadlock. The result left the tie open ahead of the second half, with both teams still pursuing an advantage in their bid to reach the second preliminary round.

Only a small crowd had made the journey to the stadium, but those in attendance saw a disciplined performance from the home side. MC Alger had gone into the match as favourites, yet ASN Nigelec stayed organised and resisted the Algerian club’s attempts to take control.

The Nigerien side looked to make the contest physical from the outset, testing their opponents in the challenges and competing strongly across the pitch. MC Alger’s defence, however, remained well positioned and alert, limiting the threat posed by ASN Nigelec.

The clearest opportunity of the half also fell to MC Alger. In the 37th minute, a free-kick forced the Nigerien goalkeeper into a full-stretch save, with the ball pushed behind for a corner.

Despite enjoying moments of attacking promise, MC Alger could not find a way through a resolute ASN Nigelec block. The home side’s defensive approach ensured that the Algerian club’s early pressure did not translate into a lead.

ASN Nigelec, meanwhile, remained committed to making the game a demanding physical contest. Their resistance kept the score level and ensured that neither team carried a clear advantage into the interval.

The second half is expected to bring greater intensity as both sides continue their pursuit of progress in the CAF Champions League. With the first leg still goalless, the tie remains delicately balanced and both teams retain a realistic opportunity of establishing an advantage before the return fixture.
