ZED FC make continental history with emphatic Confederation Cup victory

Egyptian side ZED FC marked their first appearance in continental football with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Djibouti’s ASAS Telecom in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round.

The Cairo-based club dominated Sunday’s first-leg encounter at Cairo Stadium, scoring their first-ever goal in African competition before adding three more to take a commanding advantage into the return fixture.

Ahmed Saghiri, Ahmed Atef, Abdel-Rahman El-Banouby and Ahmed Adel were all on target as ZED produced a memorable result on their continental debut.

Saghiri makes history for ZED

ZED started the match on the front foot and controlled much of the early play, although the hosts were initially frustrated by missed opportunities.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 21st minute when midfielder Saghiri struck a powerful effort to open the scoring.

The goal was a historic moment for ZED, becoming the club’s first-ever goal in continental competition.

Striker Atef then doubled the advantage shortly before half-time to give the Egyptian side a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval.

Late goals complete dominant display

ZED continued to create opportunities after the restart but had to wait until the closing stages to extend their advantage.

El-Banouby scored with three minutes remaining to make it 3-0 and put the tie firmly in the hands of the Egyptian club.

Adel then completed the rout in stoppage time with an impressive strike, sealing a comprehensive four-goal victory.

Strong African debut for Egyptian side

The result gives ZED FC a significant advantage ahead of the second leg in Djibouti next Sunday.

For ASAS Telecom, the task is now to produce an extraordinary turnaround on home soil to keep their CAF Confederation Cup hopes alive.

ZED, meanwhile, will travel to Djibouti full of confidence as they look to complete their progress to the next stage and continue what has already become a historic first campaign in African club football.

The convincing victory also adds another positive chapter to Egypt’s strong representation in continental competitions, with ZED announcing themselves on the African stage in emphatic fashion.
