Bayern Munich’s 67-round Bundesliga run ends in Schalke stalemate

Bayern Munich surrendered top spot in the Bundesliga after being held to a goalless draw by recently promoted Schalke on Saturday, ending two remarkable runs belonging to the Bavarian club.

The 0-0 result was more than a valuable point for Schalke. According to Sky Sport, Bayern failed to score in a Bundesliga match for the first time since February 2025, while the draw also brought an end to their long-standing reign at the summit of the table.

Bayern had occupied first place for 67 consecutive Bundesliga matchdays, establishing a record that had never previously been achieved in the competition. That sequence was extended under manager Vincent Kompany, who had already overseen the breaking of Bayern’s previous record in November 2025.

The earlier benchmark had stood at 43 successive matchdays and had also belonged to Bayern, dating back to the 1973-74 season. Kompany’s side surpassed that mark during a match against Freiburg.

Freiburg now feature in another twist to the story. They were the team who moved into first place after the second matchday of the 2024-25 season, the last time Bayern had been displaced from the top of the Bundesliga before Saturday’s result.

The stalemate at Schalke means Bayern have temporarily dropped to fourth in the standings. Their failure to find a way through a newly promoted team has therefore had a significant effect on the title race, ending a period in which they had maintained an unprecedented grip on first place.

Schalke, meanwhile, secured a notable point against the reigning Bundesliga power and prevented Bayern from extending either of their two historic sequences. The hosts’ disciplined performance ensured that Bayern’s attack could not breach their defence, while the visitors were left without a goal for the first time in more than a year.

Bayern will have the chance to begin rebuilding momentum in their next fixture, when they travel to Saarland to face Elversberg. Their opponents will arrive in confident mood after claiming a second consecutive victory, this time against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The trip to Elversberg will give Bayern an immediate opportunity to respond to their unexpected loss of control at the top of the table. However, Saturday’s result has already ensured that their 67-match period as Bundesliga leaders is over, while their failure to score at Schalke marks another rare interruption to their recent dominance.
