Vinicius Junior cuts short Jose Mourinho greeting as Real Madrid tensions attract attention

Vinicius Junior has attracted attention after appearing to cut short a post-match greeting with Jose Mourinho following Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat by Real Betis at La Cartuja in La Liga on Friday.

Mourinho followed his usual routine after the match by greeting players from both teams despite the tense atmosphere created by the result. However, the exchange with Vinicius Junior appeared noticeably different.

The Brazilian initially extended his hand towards the Portuguese manager. But when Mourinho seemed to begin saying something to him, Vinicius continued walking instead of stopping to speak. The handshake ended almost immediately.

The brief moment was widely shared on social media, with many interpreting it as a sign of distance between the player and his manager, according to Catalan newspaper Sport.

Footage recorded from the stands does not make it possible to establish exactly what was said. Mourinho appears to speak to Vinicius for a moment, but the forward moves on after the initial contact rather than remaining to hold a conversation with the Real Madrid head coach.

The incident may simply have been a reaction to the frustration of a painful defeat. Nevertheless, it has received greater attention because of the relationship between the two men and Mourinho’s public support for Vinicius since taking charge of Real Madrid.

After Real Madrid’s opening-round victory over Espanyol, Mourinho defended the player following the confrontations that took place during the match.

“Vinicius is not a saint, but what is being done to him is excessive,” Mourinho said, while also comparing the treatment of the Brazilian to “bullying”.

Mourinho has repeatedly said since the beginning of the season that he understands Vinicius’ personality and that the forward should be supported and protected. That background has made Friday’s gesture more significant, particularly because it involved the manager who has been among the player’s most prominent public defenders.

The scene also inevitably recalls an incident involving Vinicius and Xabi Alonso during the previous season, although that episode was more openly confrontational.

During the Clasico in October 2025, Vinicius left the pitch visibly angry after Alonso decided to substitute him. He protested with gestures while making his way towards the touchline before going directly to the dressing room without shaking hands with Alonso.

Friday’s exchange with Mourinho was less dramatic, and there is no clear evidence that it represented a major dispute. It could have been no more than a moment of irritation following Real Madrid’s defeat at La Cartuja.

However, Vinicius’ actions have been closely watched since the events of last season. That scrutiny is especially intense when the manager is directly involved, even in a short interaction after the final whistle.
