Truter’s Chippa United extend winless Betway Premiership run after Milford draw

Chippa United remain without a victory in the Betway Premiership after being held to a goalless draw by Milford FC on Saturday afternoon, leaving Truter five games without a win.

The Chilli Boys had also drawn their previous match 1-1 against Siwelele FC, while Milford were looking to respond after losing to Mamelodi Sundowns in Tshwane in midweek. The visitors had produced a strong performance despite that defeat, but neither side could find a decisive moment in this encounter.

With three points at stake, Chippa made the brighter start and created the first meaningful opportunity. Azola Tshobeni cut in from the left and struck a powerful effort, forcing debutant goalkeeper Lungile Nkosi to adjust his position before pushing the ball away.

Milford were forced into an early substitution during the opening quarter of the match. Thobani Bhengu was unable to continue after getting caught in a challenge and limping away with what appeared to be a knock. Tonny Mbunga came on in his place.

The change did not disrupt Milford’s structure. They continued to threaten on the break, with Thabani Mabena producing a quick run from around the halfway line before shooting from the edge of the penalty area. His effort, however, went wide.

Chippa increased the tempo after the interval and should have taken the lead when Justice Figuareido escaped a challenge to reach a through ball from Tshobeni. He was unable to finish, firing wide of the upright.

The hosts continued to apply pressure during a dominant spell early in the second half. Muzomuhle Khanyi came close when he met the ball first time from close range, but his effort struck the upright. Milford then had to react quickly to clear the loose ball and prevent Chippa from turning the rebound into a goal.

Milford were forced to defend for long periods but remained a threat, although they struggled to impose themselves consistently. Their clearest attempts were largely limited to efforts from distance by Siphosethu Ndlabi and Bulelani Sigomoshe.

The league debutants almost snatched the points in the final quarter. Captain Menzi Chili rose to meet a curling cross from the right in the middle of the box, but his header drifted inches wide of the near corner.

Chippa were tested again in stoppage time and were fortunate not to concede. Ndlabi met a delivery at the near post, but his header struck the woodwork as both teams ultimately had to settle for a point.

Chippa United’s next three league fixtures are at home to Mamelodi Sundowns, away to TS Galaxy and at home to Kruger United.

Milford will host Richards Bay and Durban City before travelling to face Golden Arrows.
