Barcelona weigh January signing against future salary-cap protection

Barcelona are facing a significant financial decision before the winter transfer window opens on 2 January, with sporting director Deco having to choose between strengthening the squad and preserving valuable room under next season’s salary limit.

The Catalan club currently have about €60m available under La Liga’s financial fair-play regulations. That amount would be sufficient to complete a signing, but it could instead be transferred to Barcelona’s salary limit for the 2027-28 season.

According to Sport, citing sources within La Liga, Barcelona can request that the available financial-fair-play allowance be converted into salary-cap space, provided the application is submitted before the winter market begins.

However, only 75% of the amount transferred would count towards the salary limit. If Barcelona moved the full €60m across, approximately €45m would therefore be added to their future allowance.

The issue has become more significant because Barcelona’s salary limit for the 2027-28 campaign is expected to be lower than this season’s figure. The club will spend roughly the first four months of that season playing at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys while work continues on the installation of the roof at Spotify Camp Nou.

That temporary move is expected to reduce Barcelona’s revenue. Converting the available financial-fair-play budget into salary-cap capacity would offer the club a way to offset some of those losses and help it remain within La Liga’s 1:1 rule.

The regulation limits clubs to spending in line with the income they generate and the financial resources available to them. Remaining within the rule is particularly important for Barcelona as they continue to manage the financial consequences of their stadium redevelopment and reduced matchday income.

The decision now rests with the club’s hierarchy. Barcelona could use the €60m headroom to make a January signing capable of increasing the strength of the squad, or they could prioritise their financial position for the following season by protecting their salary limit.

Choosing the second option would help reduce the impact of the expected drop in revenue caused by playing at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys and make it less likely that Barcelona would move outside the 1:1 framework.

The dilemma comes immediately after the summer transfer window, although Deco and Barcelona have already begun planning for the January market. The club must now weigh the sporting benefit of adding a player mid-season against the longer-term financial protection that the available allowance could provide.

A January recruitment would give Barcelona an opportunity to improve the team during the current campaign. Converting the funds, however, would not produce an immediate addition to the squad but could give the club greater flexibility when its income is affected by the temporary departure from Spotify Camp Nou.

With only a limited proportion of the money counting towards the future salary limit, Barcelona must also decide whether the short-term value of a potential transfer outweighs the €45m in additional salary-cap space that could be secured for 2027-28.
