Michael Carrick hints at bigger role for Joshua Zirkzee at Manchester United

Michael Carrick has hinted that Joshua Zirkzee could play a more significant part in Manchester United’s plans following the club’s decision to block a deadline-day move to Everton.

The forward, who attracted interest from several sides over the summer, remained at Old Trafford and is now being reintegrated into Carrick’s matchday squad ahead of a busy fixture schedule.

Speaking before United’s clash with Everton, Carrick emphasised Zirkzee’s importance to the team’s depth and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute across the season. The manager also highlighted the positive relationship he shares with the player, noting that Zirkzee is eager to feature more regularly.

“Josh is important. It’s the team, the squad, the depth for the whole season,” said the head coach. “Josh is happy here, I have a really good relationship with him. He wants to play more than he has done. That’s the healthy competition for places.”

Carrick added that the condensed calendar should create additional opportunities for Zirkzee to showcase his talents. “We have a lot of games coming up and a shorter period between games. Josh can do some really top things. I’ve seen it myself and I look forward to him doing it a little bit more.”

Despite remaining at United, Zirkzee still faces competition for minutes, particularly when Benjamin Sesko is available. Nonetheless, Carrick’s comments suggest the forward will be given chances to prove his worth in the coming weeks.
