Monaco compound PSG’s poor Ligue 1 start with comeback win in Paris

Paris Saint-Germain’s troubled Ligue 1 campaign suffered another setback as Monaco came from behind to win 2-1 at the Parc des Princes on Friday, leaving the champions without a victory in their opening three league matches.

The defeat was PSG’s third successive Ligue 1 loss against Monaco, while Filipe Luis’s side maintained their perfect start under the manager with a third consecutive victory.

PSG had already needed comebacks to draw their first two league games and once again appeared vulnerable during the opening stages. They had led at half-time in only one of their previous six Ligue 1 matches.

The hosts came close to taking the lead after 12 minutes when Desire Doue released Achraf Hakimi. The defender’s effort was blocked, but the ball fell back to Doue, whose follow-up was brilliantly saved by Lukas Hradecky. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia then sent the rebound over the crossbar.

PSG eventually broke through shortly after the half-hour mark. Kvaratskhelia delivered a dangerous ball into the area from the left and Marquinhos applied the decisive touch, using his chest to guide it into the net.

The home side continued to threaten, with Hradecky making another strong save to deny Kvaratskhelia. Monaco created little before the interval, although Paris Brunner had an opportunity shortly before half-time and dragged his shot wide.

PSG remained in control for much of the second half, but Monaco found an unlikely route back into the contest just before the hour.

Jordan Teze sent a hanging cross into the penalty area and Nazinho rose above the defence to head beyond Matvey Safonov. It was Monaco’s first effort on target in the match.

Paris Saint-Germain attempted to regain their lead, but Monaco struck again with 18 minutes remaining.

Aleksandr Golovin looked set to shoot from distance before instead slipping a pass through to Stanis Idumbo. The forward made space for an attempt from a tight angle on the left and beat Safonov at his near post.

PSG appeared to have salvaged a point late on when Ferran Torres found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Monaco held on to complete a third straight Ligue 1 victory over PSG. It is the first time since the club’s Qatari takeover that Paris Saint-Germain have lost three consecutive league meetings against the same opponent.

The result also extended PSG’s winless run in Ligue 1 to four matches, their longest such sequence since 2023. Despite the disappointing domestic start, the champions will now switch their attention to Europe.

PSG host SK Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the club hoping to put their difficult beginning to the league season behind them.
