Lightning scare disrupts Kaizer Chiefs’ preparations for crucial Siwelele clash

Kaizer Chiefs’ preparations for Sunday’s South African Premiership encounter with Siwelele FC suffered an unexpected setback after lightning forced the early termination of a training session.

The Amakhosi squad had to abandon the wet session as a precaution when lightning emerged, bringing their preparations to an abrupt halt. Despite the interruption, there were no reported concerns over the mood within the camp, with the players remaining positive as they focused on their upcoming assignment.

Chiefs chasing vital points

Kaizer Chiefs return to league action at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 17:30.

The Glamour Boys currently sit five points behind joint leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, leaving little room for dropped points as they look to keep pace with the teams at the summit.

The weather disruption therefore comes at an inconvenient time for Chiefs, who will be eager to ensure the lightning delay does not affect their momentum heading into the weekend.

Amakhosi also have some team news to consider, with two players currently sidelined by injuries, while three others have returned to training following treatment.

Siwelele desperate for first win

Their opponents arrive in far less favourable circumstances, with Siwelele enduring a difficult start to the campaign.

Lehlohonolo Seema’s side have managed only two points from their opening four matches and occupy 14th position in the table. They remain without a victory after drawing against TS Galaxy and Chippa United before suffering consecutive defeats to Milford FC and AmaZulu FC.

Siwelele have scored just three goals while conceding six, underlining their struggles in both attack and defence.

That poor start will increase the pressure on Seema and his players to produce a response against a Kaizer Chiefs side chasing a much-needed victory.

Siwelele have already stunned Chiefs

Chiefs will also have painful memories of their most recent meeting with Siwelele.

The first league clash between the sides last season ended in a goalless draw at FNB Stadium in October 2025. However, the return fixture produced a major upset when Siwelele secured a 2-0 victory at the Free State Stadium on 29 April 2026.

Tebogo Potsane gave Siwelele the perfect start by opening the scoring after only seven minutes, before Sphesihle Jeza struck again in the 26th minute.

The early double proved decisive as Chiefs failed to mount a comeback, with the defeat bringing an end to their impressive unbeaten league run.

Amakhosi will now be determined to avoid another setback when the sides meet again, with the race at the top of the table making three points increasingly important.
