Ismael Saibari opens up on family tribute and the meaning of his Bayern Munich shirt number

Ismael Saibari has explained the personal stories behind his goal celebration and his decision to wear number 34 at Bayern Munich, revealing that both are linked to people who have had a profound influence on his life.

The Morocco international, who moved to Bayern Munich during the 2026 World Cup, discussed the significance of the gestures in an interview with the German club’s media team.

Saibari’s celebration sees him place both hands near the front of his head and make a movement as if he is wiping his hair. The 25-year-old attacking player said the gesture is a tribute to his cousin.

The former PSV player also spoke about the shirt number he has worn since the 2023-24 season. Number 34 is a homage to Abdelhak Nouri, the former Netherlands youth international and Dutch-Moroccan prospect whose career was brought to an abrupt end in 2017.

Nouri suffered a cardiac arrhythmia during a pre-season match with Ajax when he was 20. He is now living in a minimally conscious state.

Saibari has since met Nouri and said the two have developed a friendship. His choice of number 34 has therefore become a public mark of respect for the former Ajax midfielder, while his celebration carries a separate family meaning.

The Morocco forward has won 35 international caps and scored 12 goals for his country. He made his first Bundesliga appearance for Bayern Munich last week, providing two assists in a 5-1 victory over Stuttgart on 28 August.

He was rewarded with his first start for the club in Wednesday’s German Cup match against VfL Osnabruck. Operating as an attacking midfielder, Saibari played for 62 minutes as Bayern Munich won 4-1.

His early contribution has put him in contention for another starting opportunity on Saturday, when Bayern Munich travel to face Schalke in the second round of Bundesliga fixtures. At the time of writing, Saibari has made three appearances for the club in red and white.

The move to Bayern Munich has given the player an opportunity to establish himself at one of Europe’s leading clubs, but his first weeks have also shown the personal stories he continues to carry with him. His number recalls Nouri’s interrupted career, while his goal celebration honours a member of his own family.

Saibari’s two assists against Stuttgart and his involvement in the win over VfL Osnabruck have provided an encouraging start to his Bayern Munich career. He could now be selected from the outset again when the club visit Schalke on Saturday.
