Real Madrid have named Kylian Mbappe their player of the month for August after the France forward made a decisive contribution to the club’s opening three La Liga matches.
Mbappe was selected ahead of the rest of the squad, including England midfielder Jude Bellingham, to collect his first monthly award of the new season with the Spanish club.
The 27-year-old scored four goals across Real Madrid’s first three league fixtures. He played the full 270 minutes available in those games, registered 18 shots on the opposition goal and completed 111 passes for his team-mates.
Real Madrid announced the award on Thursday evening, with a message celebrating their forward:
“👏 ¡Enhorabuena,@KMbappe!✨ Jugador Cinco Estrellas · Agosto⚽@FutbolMahou”
Bellingham also made a strong start to the campaign, despite finishing behind Mbappe in the award selection. The England international appeared in all three of Real Madrid’s opening league games, scoring twice and providing two assists in 245 minutes.
His involvement therefore contributed directly to four goals during the first three rounds of the season, underlining the attacking output produced by both players at the beginning of the new La Liga campaign.
Mbappe’s award comes as Real Madrid prepare to face Real Betis on Friday evening in the fourth round of the competition. Carlo Ancelotti’s side go into the match second in the La Liga table with nine points from their opening three fixtures.
The team will, however, approach the game with a number of absences. No further details about those missing players were provided in the announcement.
Real Madrid’s position reflects their perfect record from the first three matches, although they sit behind the leaders on the basis of the current standings. Their early form has been driven in significant part by the goals and creativity supplied by Mbappe and Bellingham.
For Mbappe, the August recognition marks an immediate personal reward after his four-goal start to the league season. It also places him ahead of Bellingham in the first monthly contest between two of Real Madrid’s leading attacking players.
The award was presented with the new La Liga campaign still at an early stage, with Real Madrid’s next opportunity to extend their points total coming against Real Betis on Friday.
