Ghislain Konan joins Wolverhampton on one-year deal after leaving Gil Vicente

Ghislain Konan is set to experience English football for the first time after signing a one-year contract with Wolverhampton, who were relegated to the Championship last season.

The 30-year-old Cote d’Ivoire left-back was a free agent following his departure from Gil Vicente and has now agreed to take on a new challenge with the Wolves.

The move is an unexpected step for a player who has remained a regular for his country but has often played for less prominent clubs than several of his international team-mates. His arrival at Wolverhampton gives him the chance to test himself in one of the most demanding football environments in Europe, despite the club’s current position in the second tier.

A key factor in the deal was the presence of Cesar Peixoto in the Wolverhampton dugout. The Portuguese coach worked with Konan at Gil Vicente last season, when the Ivorian occupied the left side of the defence.

“I am delighted because Ghislain is a good player and an experienced international. We were lucky to have him at Gil Vicente, and I think he has the qualities to play at this level,” Peixoto said after Konan’s arrival.

The comments represent a significant vote of confidence in the former Stade de Reims defender, who is joining a manager already familiar with his ability and convinced he can contribute at Wolverhampton.

Konan’s career has taken an unusual route since he left Stade de Reims. He spent two seasons in Saudi Arabia before making a brief stay in Spain’s second division. He subsequently rebuilt his career in Portugal with Gil Vicente.

Despite those changes, the defender retained an important role with Cote d’Ivoire. He remained the first-choice left-back under manager Emerse Fae and continues to be regarded as a key member of the national team.

His move to Wolverhampton therefore provides an opportunity to establish himself in unfamiliar surroundings. The club’s Championship status does not lessen the scale of the challenge, with Wolverhampton targeting an immediate return to the Premier League.

The transfer also comes as Cote d’Ivoire prepare for the first squad announcement by Herve Renard ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Konan’s move to England arrives at a potentially important moment as he seeks to maintain his international standing.

However, he will need to secure regular playing time quickly and demonstrate that he can continue to perform a leading role. Competition for the left-back position is expected to be strong.

Christopher Operi, who plays for Istanbul Basaksehir, and Hassane Kamara of Udinese are among the established alternatives. The young Christ Tape is also involved in the contest after making a promising start to the season with Toulouse, all three of whom are playing in top-flight leagues.

With Wolverhampton aiming to return to the Premier League as soon as possible, Konan will face considerable competition during what is likely to be a long and demanding Championship campaign.
