Former Morocco Walid Regragui joins Canal+ as football analyst

Former Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has taken on a new role as a football analyst with French television channel Canal+ following his departure from the Atlas Lions.

After a period of uncertainty over his next career move, Regragui has opted to step into television work, marking his first major involvement in sports commentary since leaving his position as head coach of the Moroccan national team.

Canal+ announced on Wednesday that it had added Regragui to its team of football consultants.

The former Morocco coach will be involved in the channel’s analysis programmes, contributing to its European evening shows as well as coverage of English Premier League matches.

Regragui’s move into television comes after a highly successful four-year spell in charge of Morocco, during which he guided the Atlas Lions to one of the greatest achievements in African football history.

Under his leadership, Morocco made history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

The Atlas Lions also won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title under the format adopted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following its decision to strip Senegal of the title.

Despite his success, Regragui eventually brought his time in charge of Morocco to an end and has remained away from the touchline since leaving the national team.

His latest move means the 50-year-old will temporarily trade the technical area for the television studio, where he will use his extensive experience as a coach and former player to provide tactical analysis and insight into the biggest matches.

Regragui’s knowledge of European football and his experience managing Morocco at the highest level are expected to make him a valuable addition to Canal+’s football coverage.

Canal+ has also strengthened its team with another prominent Moroccan football figure, former international defender Mehdi Benatia.

Benatia joined the channel’s team of consultants after leaving his position as sporting director of Olympique de Marseille at the end of June.

The former Juventus and Bayern Munich defender will participate in special programmes related to the European Championship and will also appear on the “Light Football Club” programme, adding another perspective to Canal+’s football analysis.

For Regragui, however, the move into broadcasting could prove to be a temporary chapter before a return to coaching.

Having established himself as one of the most successful coaches in Moroccan football history, the former defender is expected to remain an attractive figure for clubs and national teams looking for an experienced coach.

For now, though, Regragui will focus on sharing his expertise from the studio as he begins a new chapter away from the touchline.
