Al Nassr and Al Hilal Riyadh derby set for King Fahd Sports City Stadium

The Riyadh derby between Al Nassr and Al Hilal is expected to be moved from Al-Awwal Park to King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh as part of preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Pro League fixture is scheduled for Friday, 11 December, in the 17th round of the competition. The proposed change of venue would allow King Fahd Sports City Stadium to undergo an operational test before it hosts four matches at the Asian Cup, including the final.

The tournament will be held in Saudi Arabia from 7 January to 5 February 2027.

According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiya, King Fahd Sports City Stadium is expected to stage the derby as part of a wider assessment of the facility’s readiness. The Ministry of Sport has informed the Saudi Pro League that the match should be organised at the stadium, with the league involved in coordinating the move.

The testing programme is intended to examine the venue’s ability to operate effectively on matchday. It will include checks on the pitch, floodlights and screens, as well as the processes for supporters entering and leaving the stadium.

Officials will also assess crowd management, the readiness of the stands, ongoing construction work and the stadium’s other facilities.

The proposed switch would mean Al Nassr no longer hosts the derby at Al-Awwal Park, its usual home for the fixture. The Saudi Pro League is expected to contact Al Nassr, as the designated home team, to begin the arrangements required for the move.

Despite the change of stadium, Al Nassr is expected to retain the privileges and benefits normally assigned to the home side.

The report describes the match as a practical test of King Fahd Sports City Stadium’s operational capacity ahead of the Asian Cup. The venue is one of the stadiums being prepared to host matches during the continental tournament, with the final also scheduled to take place there.

No final announcement confirming the change of venue has yet been stated in the report, but the Ministry of Sport has already raised the proposal with the Saudi Pro League and coordination is expected to continue before the fixture.

The derby will bring together two of Saudi Arabia’s leading clubs in one of the most prominent matches on the domestic calendar.
